Malia Bruker is a filmmaker, media artist, and Associate Professor of Digital Media Production at Florida State University. She is currently a Getting Real Fellow, an initiative of International Documentary Association. Working primarily in the realm of documentary, Bruker’s films skirt the boundaries of non-fiction, drawing from artists’ moving image, dance film, and other experimental genres. Her films have screened extensively in North America and Europe at venues like International Film Festival Rotterdam, Athens International Film and Video Festival, Third Horizon, Antimatter Video Art, Berlin Feminist Film Week, and Chicago Underground Film Festival. Her current film, Threshold, is a cinematic VR piece that opens a portal into the transformational journey of four women—from isolated individuals grappling with the effects of trauma to a community in solidarity. Threshold has won multiple awards, including Best VR Project at Chelsea Film Festival. She is also a co-founding member of the Tallahassee Bail Fund, which she helps run.
